The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has extended the deadline until February 25 next year.
The deadline for local councils to complete the maintenance of streetlights on islands and ensure they meet safety standards has been extended until February 2025.
Following an inspection by Fenaka Corporation revealed streetlights on 144 islands did not comply with safety standards. Therefore, a a six-month deadline on August 7 was issued for the necessary repairs to be completed.
In a press release today, Fenaka said that the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has extended the deadline until February 25 next year.
The decision was made following advice from the President's Office, recognizing the challenges faced by the councils in meeting the original deadline.
ELCBs must be installed in streetlights to ensure public safety. The deadline has been extended twice in the past to give councils more time to ensure safety and repair streetlights.
The inspection of streetlights in islands followed a tragic incident in which an 18-year-old was electrocuted to death after coming into contact with a puddle of water that had been electrified through a street lamp post, also injuring an 8-year-old.
