"I do not lobby. They assume that someone connected to me might be considered for the position, likely because there are many academically capable people in my family," Abdul Raheem said.
Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla said last night that he has not proposed any of his close associates for the position of Prosecutor General (PG).
He made this remark during an interview with Sangu TV, in response to former President Abdulla Yameen's accusation that Abdul Raheem was attempting to appoint a family member to the role.
"I do not lobby. They assume that someone connected to me might be considered for the position, likely because there are many academically capable people in my family," Abdul Raheem said.
"I am not attempting to bring anyone associated with me to the post of PG," he added.
Abdul Raheem said that Yameen might be concerned that if one of his family members were appointed as PG, certain cases could be expedited. However, he expressed confidence that he would not be implicated in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) case.
"I am not worried that the MMPRC case will be investigated. I am 100 percent sure that nothing will be proven against me in the case," he stated.
He asserted that even if Yameen were to become the PG and investigate cases fairly, no crime could be proven against him.
Addressing rumors that his family dominates government positions, Abdul Raheem acknowledged the presence of his family members in the government, but he defended their appointments, noting that they are well-educated and qualified.
"This government was brought about by our efforts. There will be our people in this government, but these people will be educated and well-versed in their fields," he said.
Abdul Raheem also highlighted President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to giving opportunities to academically capable individuals.
He noted that President Muizzu appointed his son, Ibrahim Faisal, as the Tourism Minister, attributing the appointment to the President's confidence and trust in Faisal.
