Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih thanked the current government today for support extended in making funeral arrangements for his mother Muumina Hussainfulhu, who passed away on Thursday.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Solih thanked Islamic Minister Dr Hussain Shaheem Ali Saeed who, on behalf of the government, took lead in making all funeral arrangements.

"On behalf of myself and my family, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who attended the funeral, prayed for [my] mother and sent their condolences," Solih wrote.

Muumina passed away Thursday morning while receiving treatment at ADK Hospital after a prolonged illness. Her funeral was held at the Maldives Islamic Centre after Maghrib prayer last night.

While it is customary for the Imam of the Islamic Centre to lead funeral prayers, Muumina’s funeral prayer was led by her son Moosa, one of her three visually impaired children. Moosa, an Imam at the main mosque on Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru, is also a Hafiz (someone who knows the Qur'an by heart) and has completed multiple courses in the discipline.

Biggest lesson from mother-in-law is patience: Fazna

Former First Lady and wife of Solih, Fazna Ahmed also thanked the government for the funeral arrangements.

"[...] while thanking the government, I would like to especially thank Malé City's Mayor, the Islamic Minister and his wife, who oversaw the funeral arrangements with special attention," Fazna wrote on Facebook.

Fazna also shared memories of her time with Muumina, highlighting that the biggest lessons she learned were patience, not complaining, and protecting children at all costs.

She also praised her late mother-in-law's dedication to the country, noting that Muumina raised children who are knowledgeable in both religion and worldly matters, possess good character, and contribute to the nation.

"...We lost a woman who served the nation. At a very young age, she became a widow and had to do it [raise her children] without a father," Fazna wrote.

She also praised Muumina's hospitality and caring nature.

"[She] was the Muumina Dhaitha (sister) of many, many people who would stay under the tree shade of Nooraaneeaage (house) in Lhaviyani Hinnavaru. [She] would talk on any topic to everyone who would stop by the tree, young or old. [She] would arrange food for everyone who visited the island. This was reflected by the amount of people who took part in the funeral and came to pay their last respects," Fazna said.

Along with former president Solih, Moomina is also the mother of former Hulhumalé MP Ali Niyaz, Majeediyya School’s Principal Aishath Mohamed and long term Personal Secretary of the President at the President’s Office Fathimath Mohamed Solih.
