The 2022 Global Forum plenary conference took place from November 9 through November 11, 2022, at the FIBES Conference and Exhibition Centre in Seville, Spain. Ministers, other high-level officials, and representatives from more than 100 member states attended the three-day conference. The Global Forum and Spain's Ministry of Finance and Civil Service (Ministerio de Hacienda y Función Pública) collaborated to organise the event.
Deputy Commissioner General of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) Asma Shafeeu, spoke at the panel discussion and raised the country’s concerns on taxation. She spoke about implementing confidentiality and data safeguard standards in addition to the importance of effective data management tools to ensure data security. She also highlighted the challenges faced in implementation of the standards.
The Global Forum is a multilateral cooperation that brings together global nations for tax transparency and information sharing, within which over 160 jurisdictions participate on an equal footing. The three-day conference concentrated on how the Global Forum can advance its goal for promoting tax transparency, encouraging the equity of tax systems, and enhancing domestic revenue mobilization.
Assessing this year’s forum it was reported that significant progress on global transparency and exchange of tax information took place. In addition to automatically exchanging data on 111 million accounts, jurisdictions are actively ensuring that financial institutions abide by the regulations. The Global Forum also reported notable effects from its extensive capacity-building operations while emphasizing further work is needed.
