Space for Island Nations Conference kicks off at Crossroads

Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) has inaugurated the "Space for Island Nations Conference" (SINC) on May 2, at Crossroads.

The three-day conference will be attended by around 100 delegates from different countries, who will discuss topics such as climate resilience, blue ocean economy, and space policy development for island nations.

The event will feature 30 speakers, 10 panel discussions, three networking receptions, and open tracks aimed at fostering connections between space industry attendees, Maldivian policy and decision-makers, and the youth. Additionally, the conference aims to promote capacity building, businesses, and space education.

According to the President of MSRO, Madin Maseeh, it is an honour for the Maldives to host such a prominent portfolio of speakers, sponsors, and delegates.

"As an island nation, we are incredibly proud to be hosting our first ever space conference in the Maldives and are honored to welcome such a prominent portfolio of speakers, sponsors and delegates in our country. We hope to inspire not only our citizens about space, but also encourage other island nations to work more closely together, learn from each other and thrive with and through space,” he said.

The conference will host prominent speakers, including Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, United Nations Resident Representative to the Maldives, Catherine Haswell, Minister of Defense, Mariya Didi, Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, President’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Sabra Noordeen, Maldives Underwater Initiative, UNICEF.

The Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO), is a NGO founded in late 2022. The organization aims to establish the Maldives as a spacefaring nation and make significant contributions to space exploration and utilization, while also promoting climate resilience, protecting the country's maritime domain, diversifying its economy, and empowering locals through the education of space science.
