Maldives' Men and Women teams secure bronze in South Asian Junior Athletics Championship

Maldives' Men and Women teams have clinched the bronze medal in the 4x100m relay event of the South Asian Junior Athletics Championships concluded in Chennnai, India yesterday.

Maldives' Men and Women teams have clinched the bronze medal in the 4x100m relay event of the South Asian Junior Athletics Championships concluded in Chennnai, India yesterday.

The Women's team to secure third place consisted of Hawwa Muzna Faiz, Ahnaa Nizar, Ziva Moosa Shafeeu and Maryam Rooya Ali. The team clocked 48.04 seconds to secure the bronze medal while the silver medalist, Sri Lanka closed the race in 46.48 seconds.

Meanwhile, India had clocked 45.08 seconds, beating the record set by Sri Lanka's U20 team in 2018 to finish the race in first place.

The Men's junior relay team to secure bronze is comprised of Hussain Zeek Suad, Ibrahim Nahil Nizar, Mohamed Zuiz Suad and Mohamed Minhaal Shamin. The team had clinched bronze after closing the race in 41.98 seconds.

Both Sri Lanka and India surpassed the previous record at the South Asian Junior Championship. India, who finished first, set a new record with a time of 40.76 seconds, while Sri Lanka, who finished second, clocked 40.28 seconds to win the gold medal. The previous record, held by Sri Lanka, was set in 2007 with a time of 41.27 seconds.

The Maldivian teams had contested in the 4x400m relay race event finals this year. The female team to contest this event include Muzna, Zeek Ashraf Rasheed, Ziva and Ahnaa while the men's team included Zeek, Zuiz, Yusuf Aaish Mohamed and Ikram Abdulla.

The women's team had clocked 4 minutes and 08.07 second to finish in fourth while Bangladesh closed the race in 3 minutes and 57.37 seconds to close in third. The second place was claimed by Sri Lanka, who finished the race in 3 minutes and 49.99 seconds while India clinched first place at 3 minutes and 44.35 seconds.

Maldives' men's team had also closed in fourth place after clocking a time of 3 minutes and 25.47 seconds. Pakistan had finished in fifth place with a time of 3 minute and 22.39 seconds while Bangladesh clinched third at 3 minute and 21.50 seconds. Meanwhile, India had claimed second place after clocking 3 minutes and 11.14 seconds with Sri Lanka emerging in first after clocking 3 minute and 09.27 seconds.

India claimed the highest number of medals at the championship, which began last Wednesday at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Indian team secured 21 gold, 22 silver, and 5 bronze medals, totaling 48 medals. Sri Lanka followed with 9 gold and 9 silver medals, along with 17 bronze medals, bringing their total to 35 medals. Bangladesh earned 3 bronze medals, while Nepal won 1 bronze.

A total of sixteen athletes from Maldives had contested in this championship. The male athletes are Minhaal, Nahil, Zuiz, Zeek Suad, Aaish, Ikram, Mohamed Ayan Shafeeu and Aaidh Abdulla Rafiu. The female athletes are Ruya, Ahnaa, Ziva, Muzna, Aishath Shaim Azeez, Zeek Ashraf, Shal Shal Mubeen Jaleel and Aishath Shaya Shafeeu.
