NASA astronaut praises Maldives space team

Former NASA astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper has met with the team of the Maldives Space Mission dubbed as "Azum".

Institute for Global Success (IGS), which runs the Maldives space program, said in a statement that Heidi and other US officials also encouraged the Maldives space team at a meeting held at the American Center on October 10.

"...Praise to the Maldives for its efforts to launch a satellite despite major challenges," a statement said.

At a special ceremony hosted at Social Center Heidi presented the certificates of the Nano Satellite Engineering Professional Course to the Maldives space team.

The course, held in collaboration with the KSF Space Foundation, aims to teach students how to design, build and launch satellites and conduct scientific research.

The team of Maldives first space mission includes seven young people under the age 30, comprising of two women and five men.

The team members are aerospace engineers, electronics and mechanical engineers, as well as computer science graduates.

The Maldives Space Mission aims to build and test the nations first prototype satellite. It is an experimental satellite to collect data needed to detect global warming and climate change.

Heidi; who arrived in Maldives last week had met with young people and children interested in NASA and space science and to share her experience. Heidi is also scheduled to give a special lecture at the Maldives National University.
