The Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development has announced that it will take action against individuals who have rented flats from government housing projects but are failing to pay rent and are illegally subletting the units.

In a statement, the ministry highlighted that the government's housing policy and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledge include a 20 percent reduction in rent for housing units in the Greater Malé area and various islands.

The ministry has also requested that unit owners pay their rent monthly, starting from January this year.

Despite these instructions, many residents are still not making regular payments. The ministry said that it is investigating cases where units are being used for purposes other than those intended, are being illegally modified, or are being sublet.

"Action will be taken against those who do not adhere to the agreement," the statement said.

While rent reductions have been applied to units in other islands and all social housing flats in Hulhumalé Phase I, many tenants continue to neglect their rent obligations.
