The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the opposition coalition’s motion to declare Vice President Faisal Naseem as the President of the Maldives.

On February 25, 2022, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih temporarily handed over his duties to Vice President Faisal Naseem to undergo surgery. Just three hours late the President resumed official duties.

The opposition coalition filed a case at the Supreme Court to declare that the Vice President Faisal Naseem was the President of the Republic of Maldives, from the moment he took the oath.

The Supreme Court, however, announced today that it would not be hearing the case. The court did not provide any further details. The case was referred to the Supreme Court earlier as well, but the apex court decided not to accept it.

Even though the court's registrar has decided to reject the case, there is still an opportunity to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court's bench, which will have the final say on the admissibility of the case.
