Madifushi Private Island Resort in Meemu atoll has been fined MVR 20,000 for carrying out unauthorised construction works on the beach.
The reason for the fine, according to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), was the failure to complete the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the work done, including beach protection, without obtaining environmental clearance.
The fine was imposed in accordance with the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act of the Maldives. Maldives Inflight Catering Pvt Ltd has been ordered by the EPA to pay the fine within 30 days, including public holidays.
Maldives Inflight Catering, which operates the Madifushi Resort, also operates the Hulhulé Island Hotel (HIH).
Madifushi Private Island Resort is the first resort to open in 2023. The nature centric resort has 80 beach and overwater villas.
