In the ongoing heavy rains, the island most affected are Faafu atoll Nilandhoo and Kaafu atoll Himmafushi, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said.

As per reports received as of 8.30pm last night, Nilandhoo was 80 percent flooded, and Himmafushi 60 percent flooded.

Nilandhoo Council said that the rains which fell uninterrupted for eight hours caused much of the island to be flooded, but it has now been alleviated. Himmafushi, however, said dewatering had not been completed even by midnight last night.

Nilandhoo Council President Ali Ahmed said that the rains from 6am to 2pm resulted in most of the roads of the island becoming flooded. He said that this is the highest amount of rain damage sustained in recent history.

Ali said that in some parts of the island, the flood water rose to about 2 feet. However, they dug trenches and managed to dewater the streets.

'The streets were brought back to normal condition by around 8pm [last night]. The level of damage is so far unclear though," he said.

NDMA said that two islands had reported swell waves: Shaviyani atoll Narudhoo and Raa atoll Inguraidhoo.

Flooding was reported by Nilandhoo, Magoodhoo, Feeali, Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo, Himmafushi, Alif Dhaalu atoll Maamigili, Dhaalu atoll Kudahuvadhoo and Meedhoo.

NDMA said that as per Himmafushi council, the island experienced 60 percent flooding, causing sewage leaks and loss of electricity in some areas.

A council official said that dewatering had been attempted through digging waterways in the streets on one side of the island.
