Soneva Fushi will host cross-medium sculptor Scott Chaseling for an exclusive artistic residency between December 1 to 22.

During his residency at Soneva Art and Glass Studio, Chaseling will create thought-provoking art works from recycled glass bottles which will be available for sale to the resort's guests.

Chaseling’s career spans two decades and was partially inspired by his nomadic experiences. The Australia-born artist has lived and worked in Germany, France, Japan and the US. His work examines ideas of mobility, transition and liminality.

While earlier pieces centered on Chaseling’s personal narrative, his later collections explored environmental themes. His recent work was inspired by his travels on the Camino de Santiago, Spain and River Murray, Australia, where he created sculptures from detritus collected along the way.

The multi-award-winning artist's collection is displayed in some of the most prestigious institutions in the world including Japan’s 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and Germany’s Museum Kunst Palast, Dusseldorf.

The artist's accolades include the 2017 Hindmarsh Glass Prize, the 2004 Ranamok Glass Prize and the 2002 Bavarian State Prize Gold Medal.

Established in August 2015, the Soneva Art and Glass Studio is Maldives’ first and only hot glass studio. It has hosted some of the world’s top glass artists, enabling guests to observe them in action, commission custom artworks or try their hands at the age-old art of glassblowing with an experienced team. Previous glass artists that visited Soneva Fushi include Lino Tagliapietra Sunny Wang, Clifford Rainey and Howard Ben Tré.

An estimated five tonnes of glass waste is produced monthly in Baa Atoll with resorts typically crushing waste bottles and selling the load to recycling companies or dumping the waste directly into the ocean.

In accordance with Soneva’s eco-conscious philosophy, which aims to have a minimal impact on the environment, Soneva Art and Glass Studio creates beauty from this waste. Waste glass is collected from Soneva properties and other resorts across the country, melted in the state-of-the-art furnace and upcycled into stunning glassware. The artworks are then used in the resort's restaurants and villas or displayed for sale at the Soneva Art and Glass Studio.
