Anti Corruption Commission has received a complaint regarding allegations of corruption in the purchase of an apartment by Zifleena Hassan, a former State Minister of Gender Ministry during the previous administration.

Zifleena had purchased a flat from FW Residence in Hulhumale'.

Civil Court ruled on July 8 to place the flat under Zifleena's name and ownership as she has completed all the payments to Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

As per the ruling, the flat is worth MVR 3.5 million and is 1200 sqft in area.

Police Spokesperson and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan said that the police had received a complaint from a private individual regarding corruption involving a former State Minister.

However, as investigation into allegations of corruption fall under the jurisdiction of the Anti Corruption Commission and not the police, the case was forwarded to them, he said.

Rumours have abounded on social media alleging that Zifleena had purchased the flat through undue means when she was serving as a State Minister.

Zifleena responded to these allegations in a post on Facebook.

She stated that she bought the flat at FW Residences in Hulhumale' prior to her appointment as a State Minister at the previous administration's Gender Ministry. She added that she has been living at this apartment for many years now.

Zifleena was appointed as State Minister at the Gender Ministry on August 19, 2019, during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

"I am saddened that with media reporting this story, unregistered media and social media accounts shared edited photos of me and wrongfully quoted me and said disrespectful remarks, attempting to defame me" she said in her post.

She said that defamation efforts against her had not ceased since she had first entered the political field, adding that personal attacks against women in politics was becoming commonplace.

In addition to having served as a State Minister during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, Zifleena has also filled leadership positions in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). She also contested in the last parliamentary elections for the South Thinadhoo seat on an MDP ticket.
