New solar-powered desalination system to be established in K. Gulhifalhu

The Maldives Water and Sewerage Corporation (MWSC), Renewable Energy Maldives, and Hitachi Zosen Corporation on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a solar-powered water desalination plant in Gulhifalhu in Kaafu atoll.

Hassan Shah, the Managing Director of MWSC, signed on behalf of the corporation; Ibrahim Nasheed the CEO of Renewable Energy Maldives; and Miyagi Taiyo, the Managing Director of Hitachi Zosen Corporation, signed on behalf of their respective companies. The signing ceremony was held at MWSC headquarters.

The terms stipulated in the signed MOU were:

- An RO plant capable of desalinating 500 cubic metres of water per day

- A 500-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system

- Installation of a 1,450 kilowatt-hour battery energy storage system

According to MWSC officials, the project is being developed and funded by the Maldives Water and Sewerage Corporation (MWSC), Renewable Energy Maldives, and Hitachi Zosen Corporation. However, the total cost of the project was not specified.

MWSC said that the reason for undertaking the project was to incorporate renewable energy sources into utility production as well as reduce the dependency on crude oil. They are also keen on moving towards environmentally friendly technology in providing essential services to the public.
