Renowned mathematician Professor Hassan Ugail, on January 13, established a private foundation to carry out social work in various fields.

According to a spokesperson, the foundation has already carried out several successful activities.

They include a talk show hosted by Professor Ugail in Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, which attracted an audience of more than 1,000 people. The talk show, which was held in collaboration with Dhaalu Atoll Council, focused on topics such as diet, artificial intelligence, and critical thinking.

Programmes planned for the future include talk shows in Faafu Atoll and Ghaafu Dhaalu Atoll, which are to be held in April. A conference on computer science and artificial intelligence is also scheduled to take place in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll, in August.

The spokesperson stated that foreign experts will be invited to Maldives to carry out some of these programmes.

Additionally, the foundation is also making progress with its plans to contribute to the education sector by establishing science labs in each school across Maldives.

The main aim of the organisation, according to the spokesperson, is to become the most active foundation operating in Maldives. Its focus areas include education and human resources in addition to science and technology.

Carrying out research and publishing the findings is another objective of the foundation. The research papers will be available online once the foundation launches its website.

Membership opportunities would also be open to the public shortly, stated the spokesperson. Interested individuals will be accepted after the completion of a three-month assessment and some small-scale projects.

Hassan Ugail is a Professor of Visual Computing at the University of Bradford, and is the first Maldivian to obtain a PhD in Mathematics. He has declared readiness to assist the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.
