United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the leading telecom and digital service provider Dhiraagu has opened applications for this year's round of the Film for Change programme.
Film for Change is aimed at empowering the youth to explore social issues through the medium of film.
UNDP and Dhiraagu stated that under the programme, trainees in groups will undergo a training component and a post-production component with the guidance of industry veterans, to gain technical and creative skills with minimal equipment to produce five short films.
These documentary-style short films will be inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the collection of 17 global goals set by the UN in 2015.
Dhiraagu stated that youth empowerment is a key focus area under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The company declared it was proud of its involvement in the project, which uses mobile phones and tablets as film-making tools, and which complements the company’s vision to use digital solutions as a means for youth empowerment and social development.
The films will be screened via social media and other public platforms. Noting the success of last year's programme, UNDP and Dhiraagu said they hoped that Film for Change will also stimulate discussions on various social issues and inspire positive change.
Applications for Film for Change opened on June 4, and will close on June 17. All Maldivians above the age of 18 are eligible to apply, though young women are highly encouraged to step forward, and priority will be given to applicants aged between 18-25.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for interviews, out of which UNDP will select 30 for this year's programme.
The training will be held June 21 - July 1, while shooting and post-production session will be held July 2 - July 15.
The finished short films are to be screened from July 31 - August 10.
