No complaints thus far, polling continues peacefully: HRCM

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has revealed that no problems have been reported thus far in relation to the parliamentary elections, and that polling continues peacefully at 603 ballot boxes for the election of the 20th People's Majlis.

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has revealed that no problems have been reported thus far in relation to the parliamentary elections, and that polling continues peacefully at over 600 ballot boxes for the election of the 20th People's Majlis.

HRCM observers for the ongoing parliamentary election in Maldives are reporting from different ballot boxes around the country. A post on social media by HRCM stated that voting began at 08:00 hrs in the morning at 77 percent of polling stations. The post noted that delays were reported at some polling stations due to delay in preparations by election officials.

According to HRCM, the polling station at which voting began latest opened at 08:35 hrs.

"Arrangements are reported to be good at all polling stations, with signage marking the direction voters must go to in order to find their designated vote boxes. So far, no problems have been reported and voting continues to progress smoothly," said HRCM.

Voting in the parliamentary elections is set to continue throughout the day, with queueing up at polling stations to close sharp at 17:30 hours. The ongoing elections will see 93 candidates voted in as MPs to the People's Majlis for the next five years.

There are 284,663 eligible voters in the election, with 368 candidates contesting.
