President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, sent a message of congratulations to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, following his assumption of office.
In the message, President Solih extended his congratulations on behalf of the government, the Maldivian people, and himself, wishing for Rajapaksa's success as he assumes the challenging responsibilities of governance.
Noting that Sri Lanka is one of Maldives' oldest and the most trusted partners and neighbour, President Solih reflected on the relations between both countries, asserting that he remains confident that the existing ties of friendship and cooperation between Lanka and Maldives will result in greater opportunities for collaboration under Rajapaksa's leadership.
"I look forward to working closely with Your Excellency for the advancement of our bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest", the message read.
President Solih concluded his congratulations wishing for Rajapaksa's good health and well-being, and the assurances of his highest consideration.
Sri Lanka's newly elected President Gotayaba Rajapaksa swore in his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister on November 22.
Mahinda, the elder and more charismatic of the brothers, was unable to run for president, having already served the maximum of two terms between 2005 and 2015, clearing the way for his sibling.
