Criminal Court sentences Indian man for 10 years in jail for assaulting two foreigners with a knife while under the influence.

Gunaseelan Puchaimut had assaulted two Indians in Male' in 2018. He had pleaded in court that he did not attack with intention as he was under the influence of substances then, and unaware of his actions.

However, in the court ruling made on Thursday, they stated even if it was proven he was under the influence then, since he had taken the substances on his own voluntarily, he has to take responsibility of his actions.

He had said he had not taken the drug voluntarily, and that he does not know what happened to him after drinking from a water bottle that was given to him by the victims of his assault. However, as he could not prove he was drugged, he had to be held accountable for the assault.

Even though he was sentenced to 10 years in jail, he will have to serve a sentence of six years and two months since he had already been detained for three years and nine months.
