Criminal Court fines Indian woman MVR 60,000 for smuggling 2.8 kg of gold into Maldives, and orders for the state to seize them.
The woman who had arrived to Maldives in January had smuggled gold by hiding it in her clothes and on her body. As the woman have made a settlement agreement with the state and had pleaded guilty to the charges, Criminal Court has opted to fine her instead of sentencing her to prison.
The court ruling stated that the smuggled gold will be taken in by the state as well.
A number of people have recently been fined over smuggling gold to Maldives. Gold being brought to Maldives have to be declared if it is above a certain amount.
