Maldives Police Service on Tuesday, revealed that an investigation was underway into the use of a seized Iranian vessel earlier in November, 2019.

According to Police, the boat, which was initially seized with 70kg of narcotics, was handed over to an agent to transport the vessel abroad but was later reported as capsized. However, various media reports have confirmed that the vessel is currently stored at the shipyard in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll, undergoing renovation.

The agent in question was revealed as the suspended Progressive National Congress (PNC)'s Council Member Shaheeb Ibrahim, who is currently implicated in a drug smuggling attempt that occurred earlier this month.

Police confirmed Shaheeb as one of two individuals confirmed to have orchestrated the recent smuggling attempt. He is known to be involved in political activities of the opposition alliance and had contested for a seat during the previous parliamentary election.

He remains in police custody until the end of his trial.
