Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) on Wednesday night, confiscated a mobile phone, measuring three-inches in length, that was smuggled into Maafushi Prison.three inches
The small-sized device was smuggled in a box of ointment, placed alongside the tube, leaving the packaging intact.
According to the Commissioner of MCS Ahmed Mohamed, difficulties in "utilising our resources and advancing our approaches to control smuggling contrabands into prisons" has risen, thanks to evolving technology and the designing of progressively smaller mobile phones.
Mohamed noted that while there were numerous ways of smuggling contrabands into prisons, authorities observed that products were mainly brought in through visitors or deliveries and sometimes, thrown over the fence.
However, he admitted that there were also instances of smuggling in which prison employees were found to be involved.
Posting a handful of confiscated items along with a tweet, the commissioner stated that within the last few months, the MCS-conducted operations to minimise the smuggling of contrabands into prisons were successful.
Earlier this year on February 10 and 24, MCS busted large quantities of smuggled items by the fence of Maafushi Prison behind the staff kitchen quarters.
Over the two raids, Correctional Service reported having seized a total of nine smartphones, 19 mobile phones, 26 batteries, 15 USB cables, 11 headsets, 35 phone chargers, two adapters, three Mp3 players, nine SIM cards, two boxcutter blades and 10 pieces of sandpaper.
