The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the opposition coalition have signed their approval over the eligible voter registry for the upcoming presidential election slated for September 23.
Representatives of both presidential candidates signed the list on Wednesday.
Elections Commission (EC) revealed that neither parties had made complaints regarding the list. EC had authorized 25 representatives from each faction to sign the voter list.
The spokesperson for the opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu), Mariya Didi stated that the coalition had signed all the papers revealed to them by the EC.
However, Mariya did raise concerns regarding EC's method of conducting such activities.
“The candidates must receive a copy of the voter's list. It is the only way to compare if changes have been made to the document after both approval from both candidates", she said.
Parliament member for Machangoalhi North constituency Mariya questioned EC's refusal to provide a copy of the signed voter list.
MP Mariya stated she was shocked that members of the ruling party were content to not receive a copy of the voter's list, noting that PPM had signed the list without much thought.
According to EC member Ahmed Akram, the opposition signed the list after comparing the document with the published voter list. Akram also stated that the commission would not disclose the list to any individual after the candidates had signed it.
