The Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced a foreign national to life imprisonment over drug trafficking charges.

In a hearing that was held via video conferencing, Judge Ali Rasheed Hussain who presided over the case found the Sri Lankan national Nasmin Mohamed Mubeen guilty of drug trafficking, and handed him a life sentence with a fine of MVR 100,000 to be paid within six months.

The state pressed charges against Mubeen in June 2017, after he was caught attempting to smuggle over a kilogram of cannabis into the country.

He travelled to Maldives via a China Eastern Airlines flight on June 12, 2017. Customs officials discovered 812.6 grams of cannabis in a plastic bottle, and a can with 198.1 grams of cannabis, totalling 1010.7 grams hidden inside his luggage.

Maldives Customs Service have intercepted several drug trafficking attempts as part of their efforts to block the entry of drugs into the country through its airports.

Under Maldivian law, drug trafficking is a serious criminal offence punishable by life imprisonment and carries a hefty fine in the range of MVR 100,000 (USD 6485) to MVR 1 million (USD 64850).
