In comparison to 2021, there has been a notable increase in the number of viral flu cases this year according to statistics provided by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
It shows that the number of people who contracted the flu in August alone exceeds 25,700.
According to the agency, 27,553 people contracted the flu in July, compared to 3,088 flu cases reported during the same period last year. Flu cases in August last year was recorded at 16,222 while the number has doubled this year at 25,713.
The flu had also caused an influx of patients at hospitals and clinics across the Maldives. Some had described the the flu to be different compared to the seasonal viral. However, HPA did not confirm that there was any difference between this viral from others.
In addition to the flu, dengue fever also increased in July and August this year, infecting a total of 268 people in July and August. However, 21 people caught dengue in July and 9 in August last year.
The number of diarrhea cases also saw an increase in July and August. However, there has been no notable increase in the number of diseases such as chickenpox and conjunctivitis.
