Moosa Ali Kaleyfaan, member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), resigned from the rights watchdog on Saturday.

His resignation came about amid preparations by the Parliament's Committee on Human Rights and Gender to dismiss HRCM members nearing the end of their five-year terms.

In the letter addressed to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Moosa said that the current state of HRCM did not allow him to conduct his duties in a free and impartial manner.

Prior to Moosa's resignation, HRCM's President Aminath Eenas and member Aishath Afreen also resigned last Sunday.

Moosa holds a Master's Degree in Comparative Religions at the International Islamic University, Pakistan, and was appointed to the position on August 27, 2015, during the tenure of convicted former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The remaining members on HRCM include Vice President Mohamed Zahid and member Naiween Abdulla.

The President's Office recently opened opportunities for interested individuals to apply for positions on the commission.
