Fenaka Corporation has said that the reasons behind the multiple powercuts in Addu are capacity issues of the generator, as well as repeated damage caused to cables during the ongoing road repairs.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted an emergency motion to parliament today stating that there are continuous interruptions to electricity services in the connected islands of Addu City, posing much inconvenience to residents.
In a press statement released by Fenaka today, they said that the issues they are facing include the lack of capacity to generate sufficient electricity, as well as AFCONS company workers causing damage to HV cables repeatedly during their work on road repairs.
They noted that power outages in islands connected to Hithadhoo PCS has been experienced even earlier, and said that the first instance where AFCONs had caused damage to cables was on the 1st of July.
Fenaka said that the issue that arose yesterday is found to be a result of that damage, and said they believe the issue may recur.
Fenaka assured that they would work to resolve this issue.
The company said that they are obtaining spare parts to repair the generator, and they are working to send a 1.6 megawatt generator to Addu.
Last April, a Chinese company was contracted to resolve the issues faced in electricity services in Addu. Fenaka said that once that work is concluded, a permanent solution would be found for the electricity issues faced in Addu for the next twenty years.
