Minister Rafiu said that further amendments to the Sports Act will be proposed to create sports arbitration.
Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has said that he will propose an amendment to the Sports Act to introduce sports arbitration in Maldives.
He made this remark in response to questions from members of Parliament. North Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil raised the issue that the existing Sports Act does not have provisions for the establishment of sports arbitration.
Rafiu said that further amendments to the Sports Act will be proposed to create sports arbitration.
"Sports arbitration is a very important factor for Maldives," he said.
"We have included it [sports arbitration] in the current amendment to the Sports Act."
The draft prepared by the Ministry to propose the amendments to the law has now been completed.
"We will send the amendments to the Attorney General's office tomorrow or today," he said.
Sports arbitration is a method of resolving sport-related disputes by a final and binding arbitral decision.
When asked whether the Sports Corporation was being abolished, Minister Rafiu clarified that the Sports Corporation was not under the mandate of the Sports Ministry. The previous administration had proposed an amendment to the Sports Act to abolish the Sports Corporation.
