Institute for Counseling and Psychotherapy (ICP) has hosted a special discussion panel on mental well-being. The panel discussion was held commemorating World Mental Health Day, on October 9.

Discussions at the panel primarily focused on the workplace impact on mental well-being.

The panelists included State Minister of Ministry of Health Dr. Abdulla Shah Mahir, State Minister of Ministry of Gender Mohamed Shihab, Managing Director of ICP and former Minister of Gender Shidhatha Shareef, along with ICP's Psychologist Dimuthu Pasqual.

The panelists discoursed over adverse impact on mental well-being due to lengthy working hours, and work-related stress. Many highlighted the "work comes first" tradition in the Maldives; as the generally perceived notion is to remain available for work on a 24-hour basis.

They discussed on managing "work anxiety" along with facing obstacles at the work place.

Discussions were also carried forth on the challenges in treating mental health patients, and those diagnosed with various mental issues. The major concerns surrounding treatment include lack of adequate resources, and the geographical landscape of the island nation that render most mental health related services insufficient.

The panelists spoke on various steps taken in association with Maldives government to resolve the major concerns, as well as ongoing attempts to avert social stigma surrounding mental health issues. The importance of creating awareness among medical professionals to increase empathy towards mental health issues were also discussed.

Participants were allowed to present their opinions and feedback at the discussion.

The discussions' host, ICP confirms it was a success, with several key topics explored.

The official World Mental Health Day is globally commemorated on October 10. ICP earlier announced it has planned several activities throughout the month to raise awareness on mental health issues.
