Ministry of Economic Affairs, on Saturday, declared that shops in the Greater Malé region can be opened from 0600hrs from Sunday onwards.

As part of the safety measures in place to control the spread of COVID-19, the opening hours of shops in the Malé region were limited from 0900hrs to 2130hrs.

Economic Ministry’s announcement was made amidst requests for a solution to the difficulties posed due to opening the shops much later than cafés and restaurants, which open at 0500hrs.

Although the opening hours were altered, shops, cafés and restaurants must all be closed by 2130hrs every night.

The ministry’s announcement advised all customers to adhere to the Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s guidelines while receiving services.

In order to curb the spread of virus, HPA implemented a curfew over the Greater Male' Region from 2200 to 0500 hrs, starting from August 4 onwards.

The number of virus cases spiked since mid-July, after the government initiated efforts to steer the country toward a 'new normal' and eased lockdown restrictions across the Greater Male' Region following a sustained decrease of cases in June.

As one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Maldives' capital Malé recorded a significant number of COVID-19 cases in the first weeks following the first confirmed local transmission on April 15.

The island nation currently records total 7,469 confirmed and 2,568 active COVID-19 cases, along with 4,873 recoveries and 28 deaths.

In addition to the Greater Male' region, active virus cases are present in 32 inhabited islands as well as 15 resorts across the archipelago.
