Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged 11,000 plots after reclaiming Kaafu atoll Fushidhiggaru.

Dr. Muizzu announced the housing policy of his manifesto on Sunday evening, August 20 in his campaign rally held at Hulhumalé 2, near the Hiyaa housing flats. The PPM/PNC candidate said his manifesto involves reclamation of 1,200 hectares of land from Fushidhiggaru lagoon.

Dr. Muizzu pledged to allocate over 11,900 plots from the reclaimed land for citizens and promised the development of another 26,000 housing flats.

“God willing, we will be reclaiming a massive 1,280-hectare area from Fushidhiggaru lagoon. To compare, that is three times the size of Hulhumalé 1 and Hulhumalé 2 combined,” Dr. Muizzu said.

He said that the plots issued from Fushidhiggaru after reclamation will range between 1,400 to 1,600 square feet. In addition to Fushidhiggaru, Dr. Muizzu promised to reclaim 89 hectares of land from Giraavaru to issue over 1,000 plots and 2,800 flats. He also announced to reclaim 300 hectares from Gulhifalhu to issue over 3,500 plots and 7,800 flats.

The Malé City Mayor, who was the housing minister in two previous administrations, said that the coalition’s manifesto focused the development of the next 20 years, and added that the housing initiatives involve providing a total of 65,000 plots and flats from Gulhifalhi, Giraavaru, Fushidhiggaru along with Malé and Hulhumalé.

“Housing will be guaranteed for Malé citizens, residents and those who wish to migrate to the region. God willing, we promise to achieve this,” Dr. Muizzu said.

Dr. Muizzu also pledged to establish a new state-initiated housing fund to finance housing development for landowners with financial challenges. He also assured that aside from constructing buildings according to the landowners' plans, the landowners would have the opportunity to repay the loan after a significant grace period.

The PPM/PNC candidate also emphasized that housing initiatives wouldn't be limited to the Malé region alone, but would extend to both the northern and southern regions of the Maldives. Dr. Muizzu assured his commitment to establishing seven urban zones, industrial zones, and transshipment harbors across the Maldives.
