Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said he had hoped to receive Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM) ticket to run for presidency after former president Abdulla Yameen was disqualified from the presidential race.
While confirming this decision on Friday, August 16, he resigned from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) shortly following internal conflicts within the party regarding the presidential ticket. Following, the People’s National Congress (PNC) granting its ticket to Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Dr. Waheed aligned himself with the Jumhooree Party (JP), led by Qasim Ibrahim.
Dr. Waheed said PPM’s plan A involved Yameen running for presidency if Supreme Court ruled in his favor, and plan B was to field an alternative candidate from the party. He added that the last plan of the coalition was for it to field Dr. Muizzu as its candidate.
“I was hoping to receive the opportunity if President Yameen was disqualified,” Dr. Waheed said. He further said PPM’s decision to not field its alternative candidate against Yameen’s instruction was a disrespectful act.
“I was with the party for 10 years, but when they made the decision without consideration or respect, I decided I was no longer needed there,” Dr. Waheed said.
Earlier, Dr. Waheed urged PPM members to vote for Qasim in the election scheduled for September 9.
