Police discovered him making an attempt to take his life earlier tonight. As reported in Mihaaru News, Athhar had tried to hang himself, sustaining injuries.
Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifaan stated in a post on social media X that Athhar's condition had deteriorated, and he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where he is on ventilator support.
He revealed that the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) and National Integrity Commission (NIC) are looking into the incident.
Athhar was arrested for holding his partner hostage at knifepoint on Thursday night.
Through police efforts to rescue the woman, they hit Athhar with police batons. Athhar had suffered injuries and received treatment then at ADK Hospital, and later again at IGMH.
The woman did not sustain serious injuries in the incident.
