Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the presidential candidate representing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)/ People's National Congress (PNC), has pledged to reimburse individuals who acquired Hiyaa flats constructed during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen in Hulhumalé 2.

Addressing the residents of Hulhumalé at a gathering held last night, Dr. Muizzu alleged that the current government had attempted to demolish the Hiyaa Flats but ultimately failed. He said that after three years of inactivity at the site, it was decided to allow the flats to be awarded to recipients as they were, contrary to the initial decision made during PPM's governance.

Dr. Muizzu further said that the average expenses incurred by residents for finishing works of the Hiyaa flats would be refunded, and each flat would be equipped with an additional elevator.

"We plan to calculate the average cost based on the cost that Urbanco originally planned the project for. Depending on the expenses incurred at that time, we will secure a loan from HDC and distribute a fixed sum," he said.

"I want to make it clear that I will reimburse you the average cost. While we cannot cover the full expenses some individuals may have incurred for finishing at high costs, the average cost we calculated was approximately MVR 200,000 at the time. We will reimburse it and cut it from the cost," he said.

Dr. Muizzu had previously announced his intention to waive fines for social housing units across all islands in the country.

Reiterating his statement, he said that the decision to waive fines was made in response to the financial challenges people faced in paying rent due to rising essential commodity prices. Dr. Muizzu emphasized PPM's dedication to establishing a compassionate government and cited this commitment as the driving force behind these decisions.

The government has set a three-month deadline to complete the finishing works of Hiyaa flats in Hulhumalé 2, with residents required to move in during this period.

The payment for Hiyaa flats will be distributed over a 25-year period, with individuals paying MVR 7,500 per month in installments. Additionally, a monthly management fee of MVR 1,000 is collected from residents.

However, in May of this year, the state adjusted the rental rate for these units to MVR 6,300, while Urbanco has extended the payment period for the flats.
