eFaas is in the process of replacing its Israeli face recognition vendor. Face recognition services will be disrupted during this time, however, temporary alternative verification methods have been made available.
eFaas, Maldives' national digital identity service, announced today that it is currently in the process of replacing its face verification service vendor, an Israeli owned firm registered in the UK as Sum and Substance Ltd (Sumsub).
The announcement was made on X (formerly Twitter) and detailed that the transition process has caused a temporary unavailability of the face recognition service.
However, in the mean time, customers would be able to verify their identity by emailing a copy of their ID card along with their contact number to [email protected], the post reads.
While the platform goes through the process of bringing onboard a new vendor, authorities have not revealed who that would be.
National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) which runs eFaas faced heavy criticism from the public due to the partnership with Sumsub. At the time, NCIT said that it moved forward with the partnership because the firm was registered and operated under England's law.
NCIT also assured that Sumsub would not have access to any information of Maldivians other than the pictures used for face recognition.
This move by the government comes at a time when the Maldivian government is in the process of changing its laws to ban Israeli passport holders from entering into the country.
