President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the Shaviyani atoll has been overlooked by the previous government due to its small population.

During his visit to the last island of the Shaviyani atoll as part of the upcoming presidential election campaign, President Solih, the candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), addressed a meeting at Kanditheemu harbour. He remarked that these islands were among those where development projects have been least carried out.

The President emphasized that implementing so many projects in the 16 inhabited islands of the atoll is of utmost importance.

"The number of projects carried out in Shaviyani atoll by the previous government is exceedingly low. From the years 2009 to 2011, a total of 19 projects were carried out in the atoll. From 2014 to 2018, 56 projects were carried out. During our government we have undertaken 159 projects in Shaviyani atoll," the President said.

In addition, the President said that the previous government neglected islands with low populations, as their main priority was gaining votes. He said that this is the reason why the Shaviyani atoll had undergone little to no development over the past years.

With the manifesto 'Jazeera Raajje', work on providing water and sewerage systems on all inhabited island is currently underway according to the president.

The President said that the roads of Kanditheemu will be modernized and a handball court and a special area for water sports will be developed within the next five years. He has pledged to install a new electricity grid to address the electricity issues and upgrade the harbour as well.

Additionally, the President also addressed the issue of lack of space in schools in the atoll, promising to take measures to solve the issue.

President Solih said that the RTL project, whic is underway in several islands, including those in the Shaviyani atoll, will bring significant development to these areas.
