PNC, MDP candidates to contest Malé City Council by-election

Candidates who submitted their nominations for the vacant seats include three candidates from PNC and three candidates from MDP.

Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) and the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have contended for the vacant seats in the Malé City Council.

Elections Commission (EC) announced that the by-election for the Central Machangolhi, West Henveiru, and Hulhumale' constituencies will be held on July 20. The seats fell vacant following the election of the councilors to the 20th Parliament.

Candidates who submitted their nominations for the vacant seats include three candidates from PNC and three candidates from MDP.

Candidates for Central Machangolhi constituency:

- Fathimath Ishan Ali, Galolhu ward, Aina Adams/ PNC

- Hawwa Shifana, Machangolhi ward, Rihi Raalhu/ MDP

Candidates for West Henveiru constituency:

- Fathimath Shaufa Saleem, Henveiru ward, Isfahaan/ PNC

- Mohamed Ali Jinadh, Henveiru ward, Green Rest/ MDP

Candidates for Hulhumale' constituency:

- Ali Aiman, Henveiru ward, Fujayraa/ PNC

- Ahmed Rasheed (Thuthee), Hulhumale', Maavaharu 3/ MDP

The number for each candidate had been assigned last week.

Earlier in January, a by-election was held for the Male' Mayoral seat, which became vacant when former Mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu resigned from his post and took oath of office as the current President of the Maldives after winning the second round of the September presidential election.

Opposition MDP candidate and former Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Managing Director, Adam Azim succeeded in being elected as the new Mayor of Male' City.
