The decorative arch placed in the island of Shaviyani Atoll Milandhoo denotes the most major current aspiration of the island's people: the establishment of an airport on their island.
Most of the children amongst those who gathered near the jetty today to welcome President Dr Mohamed Muizzu carried a poster or drawing expressing these sentiments, appealing to the leader to fulfill this shared wish.
Building a domestic airport in Milandhoo is one of President Dr Muizzu's presidential pledges.
Addressing the people of Milandhoo today, the President unequivocally guaranteed them that an airport will be built on their island during his term in office.
"The people of this island only want to hear one thing. There is only one matter on all points of the list, from numbers 1 to 10," the President began.
"The construction of an airport on this island which is on your list of development needs from numbers 1 to 10, I promise you, with 100 percent certainty, that it will be built," the President promised.
This statement earned him a standing ovation from the entire audience present at today's gathering.
While the President has promised the establishment of an airport in Milandhoo, the island of Funadhoo in the same atoll, just a twenty minute boat ride away, also has an airport.
The previous government has also contracted the building of an airport in the island of Bileiyfahi in Shaviyani Atoll.
Additionally, President Muizzu has previously pledged the establishment of an airport in Komandoo of the same atoll as well.
