Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu has revealed a comprehensive long-term strategy aimed at positioning the Maldives as a contender to host the Asian Games within the next twenty years.
The launch event, held at Meeruma Maalam, outlined the plan's six key focus areas, collaboratively developed by the Sports Ministry and other agencies.
Among these areas, the third position on the Ministry's website emphasizes the importance of organizing sports events and tournaments domestically. The strategic plan underscores the dual objective of strengthening athlete development while concurrently positioning the Maldives as a sports tourism destination.

The initial focus of the plan centers around sports education, aiming to provide comprehensive training not only for coaches and technical personnel but also implementing educational programs for sports administrators, fostering the development of local sports management.
Following this, the plan shifts its attention to empowering and fortifying the operations of sports associations. The envisioned strategy seeks to enact measures that can elevate the governance of these associations and clubs, transitioning them into models of good governance and transparency. To extend the reach of these associations to the atolls, monthly activities will be organized at the regional level.
It includes compilation of a sports performance facility master plan. The plan includes ensuring that sports resources in the country and resources built under the projects planned can be utilized by the associations and all regions of the country.
Furthermore, the Minister announced a medal target for the 2040 Olympic Games.
Developing a long-range athletic development plan and a skill assessment plan are some of the initiatives to achieve that goal. The aim is to target medals at the 2030 and 2034 Asian Games through the implementation of these two plans. Before the 2040 Games, winning a medal at the 2036 Games is also listed as a target for the country.
