The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) is making efforts to disburse pending salaries from last year to its employees before the onset of Ramadan.

The association had received $300,000 from FIFA to cover these outstanding payments, of which $200,000 has been paid so far. The remaining $100,000 is expected to be deposited by FIFA once the necessary details are submitted.

While FIFA's depositing mechanism is in place, the association faces challenges in adhering to the legal requirement of providing a Ramadan allowance before the beginning of Ramadan. Despite efforts to resolve the backlog, uncertainty remains about directly providing the dedicated allowance during the stipulated period.

Acting General Secretary Mohamed Jaushan Shareef stated, "We are working to ensure that all last year's salaries are completed before Ramadan. While I can't confirm the direct provision of the fasting allowance on time due to the backlog, we are committed to providing it to our employees."

Several FAM employees had faced salary delays of up to 10 months until December, when FAM began salary payments using the funds received from FIFA. Jaushan expressed hope that last year's salaries would be settled before Ramadan, while acknowledging potential delays in processing salaries and allowances for the initial months of this year.

FIFA has imposed conditions on the $300,000 fund, specifying that it should only be utilized for employee salary payments.

FAM has faced allegations of corrupt practices related to previous financial transactions, prompting changes in the handling of funds. Jaushan emphasized that the current exchange process from USD is conducted through the bank, ensuring transparency and direct deposit into employees' local currency accounts.

Amidst a financial crisis, FAM's president, Bassam Adeel Jaleel, is facing charges of embezzlement, with allegations of mishandling $100,000 from the association. Ongoing investigations have led to the impounding of Jaleel's passport to prevent him from leaving the country.
