China, one of the world's oldest civilizations, boasts a rich and diverse history that spans thousands of years. Its story is one of ancient dynasties, philosophical enlightenment, and monumental achievements in arts and sciences. The pivotal moment in China's history arrived in the early 20th century when it transitioned from an age-old imperial system to a modern republic.

China's National Day, celebrated on October 1, marks the anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 which not only signifies the end of over a hundred years of foreign aggression and marked the birth of a new era for the Chinese people, characterized by sovereign independence, social progress, and economic development.

In celebration of the 74th National Day of the People's Republic of China, a big event was held at the Social Centre, where Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lixin, highlighted the enduring friendship between China and the Maldives.

"On this auspicious occasion, we celebrate not just the founding of the People's Republic of China but also the enduring friendship between our two nations. China and the Maldives have a long history of cooperation and mutual respect. Our partnership is built on the principles of equality, mutual benefit, and sincere collaboration," Ambassador Lixin said.

In an exclusive interview with The Edition, Ambassador Lixin emphasized the steadfast growth of bilateral ties between the Maldives and China due to the strategic guidance of the leaders of both nations. She praised the warm hospitality and camaraderie of the Maldivian people, highlighting collaborative efforts across various fields, including infrastructure development, tourism, and cultural exchange programs.

Ambassador Lixin highlighted the joint initiatives such as seawater desalination projects in five islands, and the China-Maldives eye center assistance program, in addition to future development projects including the development of four hospitals in islands, all of which have significantly benefited the Maldivian populace.

"The Maldives holds a special place in the hearts of the Chinese people. Our commitment to supporting the Maldives in its pursuit of economic prosperity and sustainable development is unwavering," Ambassador Wang said. "Through joint initiatives and collaborative projects, we aim to create a future where both our nations thrive together, hand in hand."

She highlighted the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road initiative, initiated by Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting that the Maldives was among the first countries to join. Projects such as the Sinamalé bridge stands as testament to the tangible benefits derived from this collaboration.

Encouraging cultural exchange, Ambassador Lixin said, "Tourism is an excellent sector for promoting people-to-people exchanges and mutual friendship. We encourage more Maldivians to visit China, to delve deeper into its culture, understand, and enjoy the rich heritage it offers."

The ambassador said that more initiatives are being planned to promote people to people exchanges in areas such as sports, youth and local cooperation.

China's National Day serves as a reminder of the country's journey from ancient civilization to a vibrant, progressive republic. It symbolizes the resilience and determination of the Chinese people to shape their own destiny and build a better future for the world at large.
