The Democrats will be determining their strategy for the second round of the presidential election tonight.

The party said that a meeting of their Interim Council is set for tonight at 9 p.m. at Billabong International School. During this meeting, they will deliberate on this matter and make an official announcement regarding their decision. The meeting will be open to the public.

The party, which received the third-largest number of votes in the first round of the presidential election, has put forward a proposal to hold a referendum on September 25 to decide the system of government for the Maldives. This proposal has been presented to both the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the two parties competing in the second round of the election.

Since PPM did not want to move ahead with a signed agreement, The Democrats continued their discussions with MDP.

A meeting of the interim council of The Democrats was held last week, where most of the members were against backing MDP in the second round.

Ilyas Labeeb, the presidential candidate of The Democrats received more than 15,000 votes after only three months of campaigning.

As both MDP and PPM are thinking about forming coalitions which is considered to be the winning formula for the election, votes secured by The Democrats are important. Therefore, the decision made by The Democrats and former President Nasheed is important in determining the outcome of the presidential election.
