Maldives Police Service confirmed on Monday that two Maldivians, earlier reported lost at sea while canoeing near Villimale' were found and safely escorted home.
Police and Coast Guard coordinated to find the men aged 20 and 33. A statement released by Maldives National Police Service (MNDF) on Sunday night assured that the search was being carried out with night vision goggles. However, at the time, they were unable to locate the canoers.
According to the Police, the canoe drifted with the current for about 10 hours until it reached the swimming track area in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' around 0310 hrs early Monday.
At that point, the two men abandoned the canoe and swam to shore said the Police.
Both men were checked into the hospital for any injuries, but neither suffered any health complications due to the event.
Weather conditions in the Greater Male' region were less than favourable since early Sunday. Maldives Meteorological Services issued a yellow alert and warned the public to exercise caution as strong winds and rough seas are expected throughout the country, especially in the south.
