Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) officially started the land reclamation project in Shaviyani Atoll Komandoo last week.
Komandoo’s council vice chair Mohamed Arif told Mihaaru that MTCC’s Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger ““Mahaa Jarraafu” will reclaim 10-7 hectors of land from south till north of the island within a period of seven days. He stated the speed of reclamation is satisfactory and that they plan to reclaim about 70 percent around the island.
Komandoo consists of seven hectors of land which would be increased to 14 hectors once reclamation is done. The counsel noted that the state aims to built flats on 50 percent of the new land for social housing.
The state has allocated MVR 11 million within the annual budget towards the reclamation of land and conservation of the surrounding areas in Komandoo.
