Linking Komandoo and Mathikomandoo, and recommencing halted projects this year

President has assured that the delayed project of linking Sh. Komandoo and Sh. Mathikomandoo will be expedited and concluded within this year while also ensuring the people of Komandhoo that all halted projects in the island will be resumed.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the project launched by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to link the island of Shaviyani Atoll Komandoo and neighboring island, Shaviyani Atoll Mathikomandoo will be expedited and concluded within this year.

Addressing the people of Komandoo during his visit to the island as part of his trip across the northern atolls, the President remarked that many projects had commenced in the island, however expressed concerns regarding the delay in concluding these projects. He had assured that special priority will be given to the expedited conclusion of these projects.

“All work commenced and all work to be commenced for the development of the island will be proceeded. I guarantee the development of the island as desired by the people,” said the President.

Linking the two islands of Komandoo was a project pledged by the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration during the approach of the constituency’s parliamentary by-elections in 2022. The project estimated to expend approximately MVR 250 million was launched at the time. However, it faced delays not long after this.

Within this project, additional arrangements to dredge land in Mathikomandoo, establish a 1,500 meters canal using large granite as well as a 1,690-meter Shore Protection Rectification project was also contracted. Additionally, the lands of Komandoo and Mathikomandoo was planned to be joined with a concrete bridge, however, all these works are presently impeded.

The President remarked that these projects are not proceeding at a suitable speed.

“With God’s Will, all these projects will be finished this year," the President said.

President Muizzu had further assured to establish an airport in Komadoo’s neighboring island, Dhiguvelidhoo today as pledged. Constructing an airport in Dhiguvelidhoo was a pledge initially made by former President Abdulla Yameen due to the approach of the 2022 Dhiguvelidhoo by-elections.

In addition to establishing an airport in Dhiguvelidhoo, the President has further vowed to construct an airport in the same atoll’s Milandhoo island. Following the establishment of these two airports, the atoll will have access to four airports altogether with the inclusion of Funadhoo’s airport as well as the Bilehfahi airport, construction of which was begun during the former administration.
