President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the land reclamation work to connect Komandoo and Mathikomandoo is expected to be completed this month.
During his visit to Shaviyani Atoll to kickstart his presidential campaign, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih expressed his assurance that the project to connect the two islands of Komandoo will be completed before the end of July.
President Solih said that the newly acquired dredger will be deployed to Haa Alif atoll Ihavandhoo first. He added that the land reclamation of the island will be completed within nine days, and the work to connect the two Komandoo's will commence thereafter.
"The dredger will arrive in Komandoo in the last ten days of July. We are hopeful that the land reclamation between the two Komandoo islands will be completed by the end of this month, as promised," President Solih said.
President Solih said that the primary reason behind connecting the two Komandoo islands is the urgent need for additional housing due to the limited space in Komandoo. He highlighted plans to develop 300 housing units in the newly connected area within the next five years.
The project to connect the two Komandoo islands was initially promised during the parliamentary by-election held last year in the Komandoo constituency. The project, estimated to cost MVR 250 million was commenced shortly after the announcement. However, due to certain circumstances, the project experienced delays and was put on hold a several days later.
According to the Komandoo Council, the project faced delays due to issues with the dredger used by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The project scope includes reclaiming approximately 16 hectares of land in Mathikomandoo in addition to the construction of a 1,500 meter rock boulder revetment and the development of 1,690 meter shore protection rectification work in Komandoo. The project also includes construction of a concrete bridge to connect Mathikomandoo and Komandoo.
