President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has emphasized the significance of having an airport near Shaviyani Atoll's Komandoo for the region's development. He has expressed his intention to construct an airport in Kudafaru, which is adjacent to Komandoo.
During the President's campaign tour for his re-election bid, he visited the island and engaged with the local community. The Council Chairman, Mohamed Shinan, conveyed the aspirations and demands of the people to the President. A key request made by the community was the establishment of an airport.
Responding to the demand, the President said the government's aim is to provide a 20-minute journey from the airport to the island. Komandoo is among the islands that cannot be reached in 20 minutes, he said.
President Solih responded to the demand by acknowledging the need and expressed the government's aim to ensure a 20-minute journey from the airport to the island. Currently, Komandoo is one of the islands that cannot be reached from an airport within this timeframe.
"We will develop an airport in Kudafaru within the next five years," President Solih said.
Komandoo is currently closest to Raa Atoll Ifuru airport. It takes approximately 45 minutes from the airport to reach Komandoo.
The government has made a significant promise to Komandoo regarding the project to connect Komandoo and Mathikomandoo. Although the project was launched during the constituency's by-election last year, there has been limited progress on it so far.
However, the President said today that the project would be completed.
President Solih said that the newly acquired dredger will be deployed to Haa Alif atoll Ihavandhoo first. He added that the land reclamation of the island will be completed within a week, and the work to connect the two Komandoo's will commence thereafter.
The President expects dredging to connect the two Komandoo's to be completed by the end of this year. He added that the construction of 300 housing units will commence, along with the establishment of basic services, as part of the development plans for the area.
Including Komandoo, 90 percent of the pledges made by the government have already been fulfilled or are currently underway, he said.
Campaigning under the slogan of "Ufaaveri, Amaan Raajje" which translate to “Happy, tranquil Maldives”, President Solih said that everyone desires a happy and tranquil Maldives which can be achieve through establishing a peaceful society. He stated that the government has worked hard to create such an environment, which the people are witnessing today.
"Roads, ports, electricity, transportation, water, and sewerage systems are being established in addition to Tertiary hospitals and junior colleges."
President Solih said that the government remains committed to providing essential services despite facing constant criticism and opposition from certain individuals.
He stated that the government is determined to prioritize the welfare of the citizens and will not let self-interest hinder their efforts to carry out these activities
"Sixty days from now, you will once again make a decision. Many people will come, making multiple promises. Reflect on what happened five years ago. Look around and assess the progress that has been made," President Solih said.
President Solih said that the decision of the people of Komandoo holds great significance, as it is intertwined with the future of the entire.
"The decision at hand transcends this island and atoll. It encompasses the well-being of every individual across the entire country. I have no doubt that after careful consideration, you will make the right choice," the President said.
