In an unprecedented win for Maldives’s carrom team, the country’s men’s team have secured a silver medal after competing against India, and the women’s team have won bronze against Bangladesh during the ongoing Asian Carrom Championship.
In an unprecedented win for Maldives’s carrom team, the country’s men’s team have secured a silver medal after competing against India, and the women’s team have won bronze against Bangladesh during the ongoing Asian Carrom Championship.
The men’s team competed against India, who won over Maldivian team players, Hassan Nazim, Ismail Azmeen, Adam Adeel and Ibrahim Hujaan with a score of 3-0 sets.
India currently not only holds the title of world champion, but also ranks first globally.
Maldives Carrom Association proudly said that this advancement for the men’s team is a hue win even if the team did not win a gold.
“Our team performed really well in the journey towards finals. [They] finished the group stage after beating the current global runner-up team Sri Lanka,” an official from the Carrom Association said.
The Maldives’ men’s team also defeated Bangladesh in the semifinals.
In addition to the silver by the men’s team, the women’s team have also secured a bronze after defeating Bangladesh. They lost to Sri Lanka in the semifinals of the team event.
Azmeen and Nazim also secured another silver for the Maldives during the doubles event. These two players are the first Maldivians to have gone to the final after competing in the international carrom tournament held in Maldives.
