The Magistrate Court ruled on Tuesday to impose a fine of MVR 10,000 on the Prosecutor General's Office for contempt of court.
Seenu atoll Feydhoo Magistrate's Court issued the order after the Prosecutor General's Office failed to comply with the court's directive to disclose specific information related to a criminal case. The state also did not adhere to earlier rulings by the High Court and the Supreme Court, both of which had ordered the disclosure of the information.
The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to disclose the information as per the court's order issued in April last year. Despite repeated attempts, the order was not complied with, leading to a finding of contempt of court. The Prosecutor General's Office was fined MVR 10,000 due to this negligence.
The court directed that the fine be paid to the court within a month.
The court instructed to disclose the criminal records and arrest records of state witnesses. While the crime records have been disclosed beforehand, the state has not yet revealed their arrest records.
This is the first instance where the Prosecutor General's Office has been held in contempt of court.
