Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, presidential candidate of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) has said that he will complete the airport in Shaviyani atoll Bilehfahi as pledged by former President Abdulla Yameen and in line with the expectations of the people.
He made this statement while visiting Bilehfahi as part of his campaign for the second round of the presidential election to be held on September 30. He said that Bilehfahi is an island where sustainable development can be achieved since the land area is adequate and the island can be populated.
Dr. Muizzu said his aim is to develop different regions of the Maldives as urban centres. He said that several islands in the northern region could serve this purpose, including Bilehfahi.
Dr. Muizzu said that the most important project for the development of Bilehfahi is the the airport which will be constructed after reclaiming the lagoon. The initial decision to develop an airport in Bilehfahi was made by former President Yameen. The current government concurred with this decision and preparations for this development are currently ongoing.
Dr. Muizzu said the airport will be developed according to the wishes of the people.
"We will develop the infrastructure to establish the airport within the lagoon of this island. We are committed to realizing the airport as envisioned by the people. I've heard that a high mark was brought in to signal the beginning of this project. However, our approach won't be symbolic. We will plan, sequence our activities, and begin the work. We will persevere until the airport is successfully completed," said Dr. Muizzu.
This region will also be developed as an Urban Development Zone. The area will continue as an integrated zone." said Dr. Muizzu
During his current round of campaigning, Dr. Muizzu has visited Haa Kumundhoo, Vaikaradhoo and Neykurendhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll as well as Noomaraa and Goidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll within one day. He assured the people that his government will fulfill the requests made by the people of these islands.
Dr. Muizzu made commitments to these islands, including the construction of housing and the development of harbors. He expressed his confidence in his ability to fulfill the aspirations of the people.
Dr. Muizzu also expressed his hope for a better outcome from the islands in the second round of the election compared to the first. He assured the people that firstly, no one will lose their jobs, and secondly, that ongoing projects or those that have been announced will not face interruptions.
